Dear KSEA Local Chapter Presidents,

I would like to ask your support on promoting the 1st Korean Student
Technical and Leadership Conference (KSTLC 2012) hosted by KSEA for
March 16th-18th in Chicago.

The application submission is on-going at this moment, and the
deadline (Feb 4th) is coming up fast. Please post an official notice
for KSTLC 2012 on chapter websites, and if possible, please forward
this promotion to KSA at local universities.

More details about the conference can be found at KSTLC website

(유학생) in the United States are encouraged to apply. We are expecting
about 100 highly-motivated participants at the conference, and various
great programs are being developed at this moment. Once review process
is completed, we will send out acceptance letter in the second week of
February to the selected applicants.

Since the conference will be hosted in Chicago, we strongly encourage
the students in Chicago area and at BigTen schools to apply and take
advantage of this great venue for networking and leadership training.

San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering Presents Countywide Events March 17-24

Interactive demonstrations and exciting speakers, ranging from skateboard legend Tony Hawk to icon of engineering Irwin Jacobs, get students excited about science and engineering

“It’s never too late to fall in love with science and engineering,” says Steve Briggs, a plant biologist and faculty member at the University of California, San Diego, who started out as an English major until a botany class convinced him to switch his focus. Briggs is also chief scientist for theSan Diego Festival of Science & Engineering, the largest celebration of innovation and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education in Southern California. Organized by UC San Diego, the festival offers free countywide events March 17 to 24, plus free bus transportation and comprehensive teacher resources.

On Sat., March 24, science and engineering take over PETCO Park for EXPO DAY, which is expected to draw more than 20,000 kids of all ages and their families to interact with hundreds of activities, enjoy shows and talk to scientists and engineers. Briggs adds, “That’s how most scientists get started—by getting exposed to hands-on research as students.”

Life Technologies Foundation is the lead sponsor of the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering (formerly known as the San Diego Science Festival). Because there is a nationwide shortage of college graduates entering science, technology, engineering and math careers, the festival’s mission is to inspire San Diego’s youth to get involved in these rewarding fields. Through interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities and engaging speakers, the festival shows students of all backgrounds that they have the potential to become tomorrow’s leading innovators.

“The technology and science that Life Technologies is focused on requires a very innovative and curious mind,” said Katie Carlstrom, science education manager at the San Diego-based biotech and a graduate of UC San Diego. “That, combined with the scholastics of science, is how we continue to come up with new breakthroughs in the scientific community. It is important to foster that curiosity outside of the school environment. This is what drives Life Technologies to become a partner in events that further education like the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering.”

Now in its fourth year, the weeklong community celebration of science and engineering features nearly 40 events across the county, culminating in the all-day finale event, EXPO DAY, which will include 140 organizations presenting hands-on activities, 50 “Ask Me” scientists and engineers that students will be able to interview, plus 16 stage performances ranging from Sid the Science Kid to the DNA Dragon to Space School Musical. Steve Rodecker, a biology teacher at Chula Vista High School, is an enthusiastic fan of the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering. Rodecker’s interest in science stems from his early experience in nature. “As a young person, I spent many summers on a farm in Missouri, where you can’t help but interact with nature. Studying insects on the farm was my great early interest in science.”

Today, Rodecker tries to connect his students with nature to help them understand that science is everywhere. Rodecker runs a weekly science club—ZU2U Club (Zoo to You)—that brings in live animals and experts provided by a local exotic pet store, South Bay Tropicals. After the animal presentations are over, each student picks one in which they would like to become an expert. At the Festival EXPO DAY, students offer a biology-focused presentation of their animal to an audience. “The festival provides a concrete goal for students in the club, which promotes science engagement year-round,” adds Rodecker.

A key to the success of the festival is the comprehensive resources that have been developed for teachers (http://sdsciencefestival.com/k-12/teachers-resources.html). And to ensure that students in the region have access to events planned March 17 to 24, including EXPO DAY, free transportation is being provided for organized field trips by a teacher, school liaison or program liaison; on a first-come first-serve basis, as long as funds are available (http://www.sdsciencefestival.com/k-12/transportation.html). This opportunity is open to all San Diego County schools, as well as education and community outreach programs. In addition, in partnership with MTS, low fare ticket prices of MTS Classroom Day Trip Passes are available to attend festival events—a great opportunity to help the festival go green and an affordable way for more people to go to the events. Transportation for the 2012 festival is being funded by Cal-SOAP, Arts Bus Xpress and the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering.

Thanks to your active participation, our chapter made good progress in every aspect. Here are a few points I’d like to draw your attention to;

1. membership grew to 171 members (68 regulars, 68 graduates and 35 undergraduates), as of January 15 (23 % increase compared to the same period of last year).

2. About 180 participants joined the science/engineering symposia and general meeting 3. 1st Jinchoon Kim Memorial Scholarship Award Ceremony 4. Monthly bio-science seminar series

산디에고는 미국에서 여섯번째로 큰 도시로서, 미군 해군 기지가 위치하고 있고, 이동통신과 바이오테크 벤처 회사들이 운집해 있어 “남부의 실리콘 밸리”라고 불리기도 합니다.

산디에고에 진출한 한국 업체로는 삼성, LG, 현대, 한진 등의 대기업을 비롯하여 많은 회사들이 현지법인을 두고 상시로 주재원들을 보내거나 현지에서 인력을 채용하고 있습니다. 멕시코와 국경 도시라 멕시코에 진출한 기업들의 주재원이나 인력들이 많이 모여사는 곳입니다. LA에서 남쪽으로 약 2시간 정도 떨어져 있습니다.중소업체 및 개인사업자의 경우 물류업, 무역업, 요식업, 여행업, 컨설팅 등 다양하나 LA 대비 숫자면에서는 월등히 낮은 편입니다.

하이테크 분야로의 중소업체 및 개인사업자 진출은 드문 편으로서 관광지로서의 높은 부동산 비용 / 유지비용, 그리고 중소업체나 개인사업보다는 미국 대기업을 비교적 선호하는 이민 1.5/2세들의 문화등이 원인이라 할 수 있습니다.

인근의 LA 대비 진출 한국인 수의 부족으로 지부 운영의 활성화가 처음에는 어려움이 있을 것으로는 판단되나, 산디에고가 미국의 하이 테크 벤처 산업에서 차지하는 비중을 감안할 때 (특히 이동통신, 바이오테크, 그리고 친환경 분야들), 지역적인 잠재성은 상당히 크다고 판단되며, 이에 따라 향후 한국 중소기업들과의 경제활동이 활성화되면, 진출 기업인 수도 증가하여, 많은 교류가 있을 것으로 판단됩니다. 현재 산디에고의 한인회 활동도 비교적 활발하기 때문에, 저희 산디에고 지부는 하이테크 분야에 종사하는 현지 (한인) 중소기업인들을 집중적으로 관리할 계획입니다. 따라서 현재 시점에서는 미미한 출발일 수 있으나, 향후 어느 지부보다도 더 중요하고 활발한 지부가 될 것이라 확신합니다.

현재 시급한 과제인 회원 정족수 확보를 위한 방안은 아래와 같습니다.

1. 산디에고에 기반을 두고 하이테크 분야로 사업을 하시는 한인들과의 교류
- 중소업체 및 개인사업자들과 지속적으로 교류를 한다면 10인 이상의 정회원 추가 확보가 가능
- 재미 한국과학자 협회의 산디에고 지부와 협력하여 INKE의 지속적인 홍보

2. 미국시장진출을 원하는 한국 중소기업들에 도움이 될 수 있는 미국 연방정부 및 주 정부 프로그램 소개 및 상담을 통한 새로운 기업 (현지법인) 설립

3. 미국진출을 원하는 중소기업의 현지 법인 설립 및 현지 인력 고용에 대한 상담

Research experience at UCSD for high school students

Please find the wonderful opportunities for high school students during summer break. These are very popular programs so early application will be important.

The CRCHD Research Methodology Training Laboratory
During the summer, students participate in a structured program (6 weeks for high school and 8 weeks for undergraduate and community college students) where they develop an original research project, write a report and prepare a presentation to take to conferences. In addition to their projects all students are exposed to lectures on health disparities research.
The program is designed for students who come from educationally or economically disadvantaged* backgrounds.

Students are considered educationally disadvantaged if they are the first in their families to attend college. Economic disadvantage is if they come from a family with an annual income at or below low-income thresholds according to family size, as published by the U.S. Bureau of the Census.

We are pleased to make the 2nd announcement of the programs of the science/engineering symposia and general meeting (GM) to be held at UCSD Price center on Saturday, November 5.

There are several points I want to draw your attention to in the revised flyer, as attached;

1) Dr. Gene Lee, Walt Disney Animation Studios, will speak about “The Technology Behind Computer Animated Films” at 7:15-7:45 PM. He will show you how Disney animation movies are being made, taking advantage of the latest cutting-edge technologies. Surely, there are many Disney movie clips you and your children do like.

(It is a really family-friendly speech!)

2) Raffles (worth of $500) will be made not only at GM, but also at science/engineering symposia. You are encouraged to join the symposia, before your family join you at dinner/GM. In fact, the odds of winning a raffle at symposia are expected to be much higher than at GM.

We are pleased to provide you with the program details of 2011 Science/Engineering Symposia and General Meeting/Dinner to be held on Saturday, November 5.

As attached, both science (chair: Dr. Jongdae Lee, UCSD) and engineering (chair: Prof. Young-Han Kim, UCSD) symposia are full of outstanding speakers at 3:00 - 6:00 PM, when you might be able to hear their individual success stories, as well as their up-to-date specialized subjects. 3) "I'm no longer a student. What's the age limit? Can I still apply?"

    YES! You can still apply and there is no age limit. We expect this year to have over 200 highly-motivated participants in their 30s and 20s. We encourage and welcome ALL professionals and academics as well as graduate, professional, and senior/junior college students that demonstrate interest in issues related to 1.5 and 2nd generation Korean-American scientists and engineers. One of the goals of YGTLC and KSEA is to maintain and grow young generation participation as you transition from school to the workplace.

4) Are there program events specific for young professionals?

    YES! We would like to emphasize that the diverse program events at YGTLC cater to young professionals and students. Some of last year's program included:

   * Career workshops such as "Investment Fundamentals," "Dale Carnegie's Developing Personal Leadership," and "Interview Principles and Practice", "Impromptu Speaking", "Korean-Americans and the Government".
   * Networking fair topics such as "Industry Culture and Career Advancement," "Starting Up a Company," "Considering an MBA," "Considering a Professorship/PostDoc," and "Starting/Leading a KSEA Student Chapter."
   * Technical sessions such as "Engineering," "Bioengineering," "Cellular and Microbiology," and "Science and Society."

2011 KSEA Fall Golf tournament (추계 골프 대회) 가 오는 10월 29일 우즈밸리에서 열릴 예정입니다.

KSEA 골프 대회의 목적은 KSEA-SD Chapter (재미 한인 과학 기술자 협회 샌디에고 지부)에 보다 많은 한인 과학 기술자 회원분들을 유치하고 골프를 통하여 회원들간의 친목과 교류를 넓히고자 하는데 있습니다.

골프 실력의 수준에 관계없이 참여하시면 골프도 즐길 수 있고, 회원 여러분들간의 새로운 만남의 기회도 가질 수 있고 더불어 실력과 운이 좋으시면 많은 상품들을 타 가실 수 있는 1석 3조의 즐거운 시간을 보내실 수 있으리라 생각됩니다.

KSEA san diego chapter announces "1st Jinchoon Kim Scholarship for Undergraduate and Graduate Members".
Commemorating Dr. Jinchoon Kim, the first president of San Diego chapter,
it promote KSEA to young generation of scientists and engineers
The Prizes are $500.00 to one undergraduate student and $500.00 to one graduate student.

22nd KSEA South Western Regional Conference (SWRC2011)

SWRC will be held in Orange County, CA on October 29, 2011. The main theme of this symposium is "Making Waves: Korea-U.S. FTA and Us - How the FTA affects science and engineering".

Since the Southern California Chapter will host UKC 2012 in next year, we decided to have SWRC early in this fall.

The conference is intended to provide the information of FTA between Korea and the U.S., in particular its potential impact on the science and technical area such as IT, manufacturing and bio-tech industries.

SWRC2011 will also provide an individual workshop session - or each session will have speakers - to mentor Young Generations (YG) and professionals with opportunities for networking and career.

It is a great pleasure for us to invite you to participate to the upcoming SWRC2011. Welcome to attend this most significant and biggest event for our South Western Region of KSEA!
